Vignettas are free portrait sessions for families with children in the hospital, NICU, or home palliative care.
Prior to the shoots, Cindy works with each family to design a Vignetta that best meets their needs. For some that means tucking away the wires and arranging the space to resemble an at-home session.
For others that means a minimal, photojournalistic approach that captures all of the details exactly as they are.
Cindy has even been brought in to photograph the last moments families have together as a way to commemorate the love they will always share.
Each Vignetta is as beautiful and unique as the family it represents. One month after the session Cindy delivers an online gallery filled with images and memories for the family to download, print, post and share.
Vignettas are currently being offered to families with children in Northern Virginia hospitals. Please contact Cindy directly if you'd like to book a session, bring her to your hospital, discuss company/artist grants, or donate to the project.
With all the tubes, wires, alarms, constant hand washes and sanitizer, we sometimes forget how beautiful these moments really are.
Nearly 3 years later, we look back at this NICU journey with so many emotions. Thank you Cindy for capturing these beautiful photos to help remind us of how joyful and precious this journey has been despite the uncertainty, tears and heartache. Each and everyday, we are reminded of our sweet boy’s strength. Keep fighting Alex! -SD
Speaking from experience: Cindy Kane is the family member you didn’t know you had until she arrived at your hospital room door during one of the most significant, earth shattering, and vulnerable times of your life. The warmth and empathy Cindy naturally radiates makes you feel like longtime childhood friends. She knows exactly what to say, when to say it, and moves throughout the hospital room with a gentle ease and a tender purpose. She treats her subject as if it were a loved one of her own--with the utmost compassion and respect. -KC
Cindy gave my family a wonderful gift. My nephew, Theo, was in remission from leukemia but we knew that it could return. We wanted to have pictures to remember when he was happy and healthy, and Cindy stepped in. She made the experience so easy and enjoyable for everyone, and though Theo has since passed away, we are so grateful for the wonderful images Cindy captured. They will forever remind us of one of Theo's happier days. -SK
The photos Cindy took are truly the greatest gift anyone could have given our family when our son was dying of cancer. We had a very short year and a half with Eli, and Cindy was able to capture happy memories that are priceless to us. -LO
I found Cindy through a recommendation from a nurse caring for our baby. I didn't want to miss out on newborn photos just because our baby was in the NICU. The challenge with NICU photography is that every day is unpredictable. Anything can happen.
Cindy was so positive and respectful of our situation. Her energy was exactly what I needed in a time of uncertainty with my baby. For an hour I was in a happy place and not thinking about all the medical stuff. -HP
I never anticipated having a baby in the NICU, and I certainly never thought pictures of that time would help me heal from the experience. Cindy's photographs made that possible. Without the whir of breathing machines and the beeping of monitors, I was able to re-experience those stressful days with a sense of peace, grace, and gratitude. -SM
